French legal practice operates within a framework that has no direct US equivalent: the avocat profession (not "lawyer" in the generic English sense, but a licensed member of a French Barreau) is governed by the Loi 71-1130 du 31 decembre 1971 and the Reglement Interieur National (RIN) of the French Bar (CNB). The avocat practice has two fundamental infrastructure requirements not found in US practice: CARPA and RPVA.

CARPA (Caisse des Reglements Pecuniaires des Avocats) is the mandatory French attorney client funds system.
