The 2024 Re:Invent S3 Tables announcement made Iceberg a first-class S3 bucket type, removing the need for a separate Iceberg metastore for many AWS-native pipelines. The lakehouse engines on top are Athena, EMR, Redshift Spectrum, and Glue ETL. Strengths: deep AWS integration, IAM-native access, and Iceberg-native S3.
